Septic Tanks

A septic tank is a chamber that holds and
separates solids from sewage to produce
untreated effluent.

Despite improved efficiencies modern septic tanks still contain
about 70% of the original pollutant. Depending on ground
conditions it may then be possible to further reduce this by
discharging the liquid into a soakaway system. The use of a
septic tank is dependent on ground conditions and water table
levels. The solids left behind partially decompose and form a
sludge that will need removal at 9 – 12 month intervals on average.
